Six Ways to Make Your Message Stand Out
May 2004
Make the most of white space. Sometimes less is more, and in direct mail a cluttered piece hides the main message.
Use a unique shape. In a world full of #10 envelopes and postcards, a larger or smaller piece breaks through mailbox clutter.
One message dominates. Filling your mail with too much information at once will overwhelm your reader and likely discourage them from spending more time with your mail.
Get creative. The USPS has loosened restrictions over the years about what you can mail. Your mailer can help you with specifics.
Optimize typeface simplicity. Your computer may have 100 different fonts, but that doesn't mean you should use all of them. Stick to one or two easy to read fonts per piece for easy readability.
A great offer. There's no substitute for a compelling offer. It should be good enough to spark interest, but not so good that you dig a promotional hole for your company.
