Consolidated A Merriam Tradition
May 2004

As a long time sponsor of the Merriam Parks, Recreation and Community Center Foundation, Consolidated Mailing once again helped the organization present their annual dinner theatre production.

A local troupe performed Hula Hoop Sha-Boop at the Community Center to a sold out crowd at the Merriam Community Center. Performers donned poodle skirts and blue suede shoes to pay homage to the Golden Age with nostalgic songs and skits. The troupe was from the Chestnut Theatre and featured a University of Kansas student. Brad Zimmerman Productions produced the show.

Nancy Hupp, President of the foundation, said proceeds from the benefit go back into the Merriam Parks and Recreation fund. Since its conception in 1989, the foundation has purchased a number of supplies for the community center, including furniture, a digital piano and the Irene B. French Giving Tree, a recognition program to encourage memorial gifts. Hupp said the foundation also sponsors concerts at the market place near the community center in the summer.

Consolidated Mailing also helped organize The 2004 Heartland Artist Exhibition at the community center. Of the 48 artists featured, 33 were from Kansas or Missouri.

Out of town art was shipped to Consolidated Mailing where they were unpacked and prepared for presentation. "Consolidated Mailing was a big help," Hupp said. Consolidated Mailing and Assistant Director Tim Murphy developed a better way to get the art that comes from across the country to Merriam, Kansas, Hupp said.

The works ranged from oil portraits to watercolor still lifes and explored a number of emotions and sceneries. One work by AB Word, Kirby, WY, pays tribute to the World Trade Center tragedy.
